Treating Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Naturally The
focus of behavioral treatment for the symptoms of ADHD [Attention deficit
hyperactivity disorder -brain disorder] involves providing the child with
positive consequences[ rewards] for behaving in appropriate ways. Suppose if the child is playing quietly we should sure make a encouraging comment such as "You are doing such a nice job of playing quietly, it looks really nice. We must think about the kinds of behaviors that we want to encourage and we must make sure that our child understands what we want him or her to do. We should be prepared to praise the child whenever we happen to see that the child behaves appropriately. This technique of noticing good behavior is easy to follow and can be very helpful in treating the child with ADHD. Some physicians or psychiatric experts often recommend the parents to make a conscious effort to observe their child doing something good at least 5 times a day. The moment the children are convinced that they are being noticed by their parents and that they will be appreciated for good behavior ,the frequency of good behavior will automatically increase. Along with these so called "social rewards", behavioral treatment also involves providing the child with privileges for appropriate behavior. suppose, if the child by mistake has developed the unwanted habit of talking back, the parent need to tell him to put away his toys. One way of increasing the child's compliance is by giving a tangible reward or privilege, incase if he follows our request. We can explain the child that each time he obeys our order or command ,he will get a point. These points can then be used to purchase a reward or privilege such as TV time, computer time, etc. Formulating a good behavior plan and implementing it effectively is not going to be easy. The parents may require professional assistance to for this. Though the specifics of a good plan will vary from child to child and from parent to parent, we need remember few general principles that are important. We should be very clear about what behavior is expected of the child in order to earn the reward and we should make the child to understands this. We should
also make sure that the expectation we have for the child is reasonable
. we should not set expectations that are not appropriate for your child's
age.
