Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Medication Options

Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is the most commonly diagnosed psychiatric disorder of children. It is affecting about 35% in the United States.

It is believed to be a physiological disorder of the brain with a genetic factor. Children with ADHD are impulsive, very active, inattentive, and bad learners.

They are frequently disruptive, aggressive and difficult to control. ADHD is treated medically with stimulant drugs such as Ritalin, oral anti-hypertensive and antidepressants. These medications are effective if carefully monitored.

The side effects are certainly possible. Most of these drugs should not be given to children under age six. There is a risk of toxicity. There is very little dosage information due to inadequate testing for adverse drug reactions.

Nearly 20 % of ADHD children do not respond to the first stimulant drug. They may have a negative reaction also at times.

Clinicians who are practicing homeopathy for ADHD have reported good results. But in most of the cases, objective evidence has been lacking. Now, a double blind, placebo-controlled study of 43 children with ADHD shows that homeopathy can be effective in treating this disorder.

As per an article published in the British Homeopathic Journal [Oct 1997] children affected with ADHD were given either a homeopathic treatment or a placebo for ten days.

Then parents or caretakers valued the children on the amount of ADHD behavior shown by them. Those receiving homeopathic medicines showed significantly less ADHD behavior than those given placebos.

They were evaluated after two months after the end of the study. Nearly 57% of the children showing improvement with homeopathy had continued to improve, even after discontinuing the homeopathic medicines. 24% relapsed the condition .The remaining 19% continued to experience positive results, only while consuming the homeopathic medicines.

The homeopathic medicines that were used and found to be helpful for ADHD were Stramonium, Cina and Hyoscyamus niger. stramonium was specifically indicated when children had many fears, or suffered symptoms of post-traumatic stress disorder.cina benefits children who were physically aggressive.

Children with manic or sexualized symptoms responded well to Hyoscyamus niger.Aconite: this is indicated especially for those children who often have strange and irrational fears, and excessive sweating at night, a tendency to fevers, and thirst.

Anacardium: this is given for those who feel let down, isolated, and separated from the world; gives good results for those who feel pathological inferiority. Very effective for those who feel that they need to prove themselves?
