Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Diagnosis in Children Attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] is a syndrome. When children are
diagnosed for ADHD, they must be attended immediately. Before opting for treatment the disorder should be diagnosed properly. Confirming the disorder is bit difficult as there is no specific symptoms that confirm ADHD. Many symptoms that are exhibited by ADHD children can be seen in other psychiatric conditions. ADHD affects 3% to 6% of children in United States of America. Whether this disorder represents a brain disorder is a matter of debate among experts.DSM-IV criteria are used in the diagnosis of ADHD. THIS is as per the AAP Committee on Quality Improvement (2000). DSV-IV criteria is without clear empirical data supporting the number of items required for diagnosis. AAP committee also opines that the behavioral characteristics themselves are subjective. A study was conducted to vindicate the above mentioned assumption on North Carolina Appalachia families. as per the study 57% of those treated with stimulant medications did not fulfill DSM criteria for ADHD. 29.3% out of 57% e had no ADHD symptoms at all . Structural and functional differences between the brains of ADHD patients and normal patients are often interpreted to prove that the that the disorder is brain-based. Nevertheless the differences if there is any , cannot be considered as sufficient evidence to establish a relationship because Selection of patients by itself is wrong due to the nature of the diagnostic process and the Cause and effect is assumed, not proved . This means that the brain differences may be a result of a disorder rather than causing the disorder. Experience, thinking, work and behavior can effect chemical or structural change in the brain. Apart from this the drug treatment also can cause chemical and/or structural changes in the brain. An alternative approach to diagnose ADHD is to conceptualize ADHD as a cultural and developmental behavior rather than a biological or neurological behavior or phenomenon . Such conceptualization
includes Parenting style ,Exposure to electronic items and computer, passive
stimuli at young ages such as TV, electronic games, computers, etc ,problems
of nuclear families and increased mobility ,Educational and behavioral
expectations imposed at children at younger ages that are not matching
with developmental capacities
