deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] a disorder of brain which generally
takes its toll on children ,has many treatment options. The long acting stimulants formulations needs to given once a day. The long acting stimulants can sustain their effect for 8-12 hours. Parents love to use Long acting stimulants as dose at school is not necessary. There are four types of stimulants used in the treatment of ADHD. They
are as follows amphetamines,methylphenidate, Non stimulant- The newest medication for treatment of ADHD is Strattera. This is not a stimulant. Straterra is an inhibitor that acts on the neurotransmitter norepinephrine as the antidepressants act on the neurotransmitter seratonin, allowing the natural chemical to remain longer in the brain before being drawn back up. Because it is a non-stimulant, it is widely preferred and less objectionable to some families. It also has similar side effects just like any other medications used for ADHD. Antidepressants and anti-anxiety medications-In some cases of ADHD, antidepressants or anti-anxiety medications may be prescribed. These medications can be given in addition to or in place of stimulants for the treatment of ADHD. The decision of using these medications is based on other symptoms in addition to the typical of ADHD alone. Antidepressants affect the neurotransmitters seratonin or norepinephrine. Of late there are few serious concerns regarding the safety of some antidepressants like Paxil and Zoloft. Antipsychotic or mood-stabilizing medications- in certain conditions that include symptoms of ADHD, other medications like Antipsychotic medications can be prescribed. Antipsychotic
medications are prescribed for children if the child or adult have seizure
with symptoms of ADHD.The mood Stabilizers are in general not recommended
for children or adolescents. As we all know that all medications have side effects. Sometimes a change in dosage, brand or type of medication will reduce the side effects. The problem
with medications for ADHD is that they are most often prescribed for young
children; hence it is very difficult to find out the side effects as the
children will not be able express themselves clearly.
