ADHD Medication Non-Stimulant Attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder [ADHD] is generally treated by stimulant
medications. But at times when the stimulants are not effective other
medications are tried that are not stimulants. Let us have some discussion
about the no stimulants here. The anti depressant medications are prescribed for those who have mood sequealae. Dosage levels in spite of the availability of specific guidelines, should be decided on a case to case basis. ADHD
persons are mostly bad self observers. It is beneficial to take the help
of a person with whom the ADHD person is close in order to observe the
improvement or deterioration of the symptoms or behavior. We
should always keep in mind that treatment of ADHD with Antidepressants are often used to improve the control of the patient's symptoms, rather than as treatment of primary depression. Few physicians believe that the SSRI's have more benefits, especially with children, for the mood aspects of ADHD. This is because SSRI'S cause less side-effects than old anti-depressants such as the tricyclics [Imipramine, Nortriptyline, and Amitryptyline] . Of late Desipramine
is not much prescribed due to some unexplained sudden deaths which appeared
to be related to heart function.Zoloft, Paxil, and Prozac, are the three
most popular SSRI Bupropion
HCL (Wellbutrin) can also be a good second-line The side-effects of Busoprone are better tolerated OR controlled than those of other medications used for ADHD. It should always kept in mind that , every individual responds differently and uniquely to a specific medication. The effective administration of a specific medication for any psycho-neurological condition will still be an art, than a science in the times to come. In order to assess the effectiveness of medication [ stimulant or non stimulant] it is important to note whether an improvement has happened in the following symptoms. The symptoms to be noted are Inattentiveness, academic underachievement,Fidgeting ,hyperactivity,Behavioral or verbal impulsivity, difficulty falling asleep at night, Trouble waking
up in the morning ,Excessive irritability with-out cause, easy frustration
Bedwetting,Dyslexia with spatial reversals , Episodic explosiveness, emotional
outbursts,Unexplained and persistent emotional negativity . If in case
ther medication does not improve positively with any or all of these symptoms
then either an increased dosage or change of medicine is required.
