Adhd Medication Stimulant It
is always great help if we are aware of the different medications that
are available for the treatment of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder
[ADHD]. These antidepressants must be considered if 2 or 3 stimulant medications that are tried dont give desired results for the child with ADHD. Stimulants include different formulations of methylphenidate and amphetamine. These medications are available in short, intermediate and long acting forms. The decision on medicine that needs to be used is easier to make if the child can't swallow pills. There are no liquid preparations available for any of the stimulants. The short acting stimulants such as Ritalin and Adderall can be crushed or chewed if necessary. The sustained release tablets needs to be swallowed as a whole except for Adderall XR. In general whatever may be the medication; we should begin at a low dose and slowly increase the dosage. Unlike the other medications, the stimulants are not prescribed as per the weight of the individual. Hence a 6 year old child and 12 year old child may be taking same quantity of medicine. As there are no standard dosages for stimulant medications based on the weight of the child, the stimulants are started at a low dosage and gradually the dose is increased to find a best dose for the child. This dose should posses optimal effects with minimal side effects. Long Acting
Stimulants-The long acting stimulants used for the treatment of ADHD generally
have duration of 8-12 hours. This can be given just once a day. It is approved for the treatment of children with ADHD who are over six years of age. Adderall XR is a sustained release form of Adderall. This is a popular stimulant. This contains dextroamphetamine and amphetamine. It is available as a 10mg, 20mg and 30mg capsule. unlike many of the other sustained release stimulants , the capsule can be opened and poured onto juice if the child is not willing to swallow a pill.Adderall XR is also available in 15 mg and 25mg capsule. Concerta- this is a sustained release form of methyphenidate (Ritalin). It is available as an 18mg, 36mg and 54mg tablet. This medicine works for 12 hours. Like Adderall
XR, this medicine can be used for children over six years of age.Metadate
