Atomoxetine-Atomoxetin, (Strattera) is manufactured by Eli Lilly.It is the first non-stimulant that got FDA approval for the treatment of ADHD. Atomoxetin is a noradrenergic reuptake inhibitor.
This selective noradrenergic reuptake inhibitors can affect cardiac rhythm in children. Atomoxetine donot have a significant effect on cardiac rhythm.
Common side effects of Atomoxetin are headache, abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, loss of weight, anxiety, sleepiness and insomnia. This medicine causes less insomnia and appetite suppression than methylphenidate.
However this medicine will cause a higher incidence of sleepiness and vomiting than methylphenidate. It is given once a day in the morning. This medicine has a short half life, but the clinical effect lasts for a full day and even into the next morning.
Some clinicians prescribe Atomoxetin twice a day to minimize the nausea. It can be mostly given to those who cannot tolerate stimulants due to irritability or weight loss.
Modafinil- Modafinil (Provigil) is used for treatment of narcolepsy in adults. It is chemically unrelated to methylphenidate or amphetamine. Modafil causes less irritability and jitteriness, When compared to methylphenidate and amphetamine.
It acts on the frontal cortex and is more selective in its area of action than the other stimulants. As per Taylor and Russo this medicine is effective for adults with ADHD.
However a larger study sponsored by Cephalon indicated that Modafinil is as effective as placebo and nothing more than placebo. Some of the studies sggest that there is a positive effect on children when larger doses are used.
Estrogen Supplementation -Some women feel that their ADHD symptoms are more pronounced in the premenstrual period and during the peri-menopausal years. fluctuating levels of estrogen may lead to depressed mood.
Some women with ADHD have reported improvement in memory and attention after supplementation of estrogen. A women who has hormone-related disturbances of mood might benefit from a stimulant, estrogen supplementation, or a combination of these medications.

More systematic research is needed to find out the effectiveness of estrogen
supplementation in the treatment of ADHD.
