Adhd Medication for Children ADHD
is a brain disorder of toddlers, child, teenager and adult.ADHD [attention
deficit hyperactivity disorder] medications are generally prescribed for
school-age children, and the usage is generally discontinued when they
become adults. Although the company that manufactures Ritalin indicates that Ritalin should not be used in children under six years of age, some physicians are prescribing medications for children as young as age two. Ritalin was introduced in the 1950s as a treatment for narcolepsy, (a condition in which a person suddenly falls asleep. the Ritalin was first used for treatment of ADHD in the 1960s. almost 45 years are over but still there is no study on the long-term effects of the same medicine. As per Canadian Medical Association the research has conclusively proven short term effectiveness of Ritalin there is a little is known about the long-term efficacy and safety of the same drug. As a matter of fact the average duration of randomized trials of the drug is 3.3 weeks. There are no long term studies. This is of concern because we could not ascertain whether the initial positive effects are diminishing over a period of time. Moreover, we don't know anything about the side-effects. Persistent and negative side effects are sleep disturbances, reduced appetite, and suppressed growth. These side effects might have important health implications for the millions of children who are currently taking medication for ADHD. Continued monitoring and community-based research activities that focus on sociodemographic and geographic variation in ADHD diagnosis and treatment are the need of the hour. As per The National Institutes of Health most recent report, early Ritalin exposure may Cause Long-Term Effects on the Brain. It also suggests that wrong diagnosis of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) combined with prescription of drug in children may develop depressive symptoms in adulthood. Because of
the lack of long term studies on the drug, science doesn't know whether
children who are prescribed Ritalin grow up to be more successful adults
than children with ADHD who donot take the drug. According
to The Wall Street Journal article some researchers now wonder if scientists
like Einstein and Edison will choose different career paths because their
creativity and drive are reduced by ADHD drugs. The researchers also worry
that the stigma of ADHD label could lead some kids to lose confidence,
and dream smaller dreams.
